On 8th July 1916, when all eyes were on the Somme, 16th Rifle Brigade of 117 Brigade, 39th Division moved into the front line further north at Festubert, taking over the Festubert left sub sector from 17th King’s Royal Rifle Corps and remaining in these positions until relieved on 14th July when they moved back to reserve positions. The Battalion Diary records that during the 6 days spent here, 16th Rifle Brigade had to contend with both artillery and machine gun fire on a daily basis and that their casualty list slowly mounted up. One of these casualties was George Hunt, who was killed on 14th July. |
